Man Utd face €5m problem as key transfer stalls
Manchester United’s progress in the summer transfer window has stalled over a €5 million problem that looks difficult to resolve.
Ruben Amorim’s side want to make further signings but need sales in order to make it happen. A goalkeeper and midfielder are high on the Portuguese manager’s shopping list following Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal.
Jadon Sancho is one of the players who had been earmarked to leave Old Trafford, but it appears the England winger is reticent to do so unless a club can match his €10.5 million-per-year Man Utd wages.
Roma had agreed a €24 million transfer fee with Man Utd for the 25-year-old attacker, but has turned down the Serie A side, according to Nicolo Schira. He reports that the club’s contract offer of €5m per year until 2030 was rejected by Sancho, who does not want to see his annual wage more than halved.
Fabrizio Romano confirms: “Jadon Sancho’s agent also informed AS Roma of their decision not to accept the proposal.
“Sancho wants to consider other clubs’ proposals and AS Roma will now look at different options.”
Sancho cool on Besiktas
Similarly, a move to Super Lig club Besiktas is not something that Sancho is currently considering.
Fabrizio Romano reports: “Besiktas called two weeks ago to ask for deal conditions… but since then, no fresh contacts took place.
“Besiktas remain willing to match Man United asking price but Sancho is not accepting a move to Turkey now.
“It can be an option only later on — with Turkish market closing on September 12.”
Besiktas are, however, willing to offer Sancho €9m per year, according to Sportmediaset's Orazio Accomando.
Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea but failed to enhance his reputation at Stamford Bridge, despite a Premier League campaign that saw him chalk up seven goal contributions in 31 appearances.
The Blues were left cool on the player, such that they elected to spend €6m not to sign him.
Sancho does not appear to have a place in Amorim’s plans either. It seems, though, that he is willing to sit out the remaining year of his lavish contract and take his chances are a free agent next summer rather than move now.
