Transfer insider David Ornstein has picked his signing of the summer transfer window, despite the fact that there is more than a fortnight remaining.

Liverpool have dominated the headlines due to their big spending on the likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, while Chelsea have won praise for their ability to bring in the likes of Liam Delap for a relative bargain. Manchester United, meanwhile, have totally reshaped their attack with a trio of signings capped by Benjamin Sesko, yet Ornstein believes Arsenal have the best pound-for-pound signing this summer.

“The one they had already lined up, that Berta helped push over the line that Edu and Jason Ayto had worked on was Zubimendi, who I think could be one of the best signings in the Premier League,” he said when speaking on The Sports Agent Podcast.

Host Mark Chapman chipped in: “I think that’s the best signing of the transfer window so far.”

Ornstein replied: “Absolutely magnificent. This is a top player for club and country. We know Liverpool tried to sign him last summer and that speaks volumes because of the quality of Liverpool’s recruitment department.”

Positive Gyokeres verdict

But it’s not just Zubimendi who has caught Ornstein’s eye. The transfer insider also picked out Viktor Gyokeres as a key signing and one that Berta would have wanted from his arrival.

“Arsenal had a clear plan for the centre forward position. And that really does look like a very good value deal if he scores the goals, which is crucially what they needed,” he said.

“They’ve got to deliver this season. Externally, there will be pressure on Arteta to get over the line after the three second-placed finishes. No trophy since the 2020 FA Cup. He will have high expectations on himself.

“I don’t sense the same internally because they’re right behind him. They back him wholeheartedly. But it will be a major season for Arsenal.”
