Liverpool have received a major update in their pursuit of Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi.

The England international defender has already agreed personal terms with the Anfield outfit, leaving only a club-to-club agreement to be found before the transfer can be completed.

Guehi is expected to become the fourth major addition for Arne Slot’s side this summer. More than €210 million has already been spent to sign Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.

And Liverpool are set to continue their historic summer by signing Guehi. There is, however, a sticking point over the player’s fee.

Crystal Palace want €52.5m (£45m) for Guehi, according to BBC Sport. The Merseyside outfit, however, have only been willing to offer €23.5m (£20m) for the defender, according to The Palace Way.

This is a massive gulf of €29m and may prove difficult for Liverpool to bridge.

A delicate situation

Guehi only has one year left to run on his contract, which means that Palace’s position in negotiations are vulnerable, but the Reds could equally have played themselves into a tricky corner.

Jarell Quansah is third-choice centre-back with Liverpool but will undergo a medical with Bayer Leverkusen ahead of a €30m move that is expected to go through imminently.

If he departs, Slot’s side will suddenly look shorthanded in the heart of their rearguard.

Joe Gomez remains at Anfield but has been troubled by hamstring issues for much of the last six months. He has played only 11 minutes of football since picking up the problem against West Ham on 29 December.

With Gomez joining Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as one of only three senior central defenders on Liverpool’s books, the pressure will be on the Reds to add another body.

Guehi appears to be the first-choice target, but simply waiting until next summer for his contract at Crystal Palace to expire does not appear to be a viable strategy. As such, the Reds need to find an agreement with the London side.
