Man Utd trigger Cunha release clause after rejected bid - Ornstein

Manchester United have informed Wolverhampton Wanders that they will trigger Matheus Cunha's €74 million release clause after having a formal bid rejected, according to David Ornstein.
The Red Devils are expected to make the Brazilian forward their first major signing of the summer transfer window, but the talks over this deal have already been dragging on for some time.
Cunha is keen on heading to Old Trafford, and the club's lack of European football is in no way a dealbreaker for the 25-year-old. Despite this, the deal has still not been completed.
The versatile attacker has a €74 million release clause in his deal, which can be paid off in three instalments between now and 2027. However, on Tuesday evening, Man Utd opened formal talks with Wolves in a bid to negotiate better payment terms.
The Red Devils were still willing to match the €74m price of his clause, but they would have preferred to pay off this fee over the course of five years rather than two.
Man Utd want more Cunha instalments
Man Utd made an opening offer for Wolves to consider, but the Molineux side stood firm and demanded Cunha's contractual obligations be met. After some back and forth, with Man Utd also offering four yearly instalments, the Red Devils gave up.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Man Utd have now informed Wolves that they will trigger Cunha's release clause and thus bypass the need for negotiations.

Wolves have had no choice but to grant Cunha permission to undergo his medical and to finalise his transfer, with the deal now set to be completed in the coming days.
Man Utd are looking to get the signing of the Brazil international over the line by June 1, when the Premier League's exceptional, 10-day Club World Cup transfer window opens.
