Bayer Leverkusen have discussed summer moves for Manchester United outcasts Alejandro Garnacho and Antony, according to German media.

The Bundesliga runners-up have appointed former Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag as their new head coach, and inevitably speculation surrounding some of his former players has cropped up.

During his time at Man Utd, Ten Hag was frequently criticised for signing players he had worked with before, and it is therefore easy to suggest that this trend could continue at his new club, even though the recruitment structure at Leverkusen vastly differs from Man Utd's.

Earlier this week, reports began claiming that Ten Hag is intent on linking up with Alejandro Garnacho again after previously helping him establish himself as a first-team star at Old Trafford.

The Argentine has been told to find a new club by new Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim, and Leverkusen are believed to have sounded out a potential summer move. However, Man Utd's touted €60 million price tag casts doubt on the German club's ability to sign him.

Leverkusen want Garnacho and Antony

German outlet Kicker has now provided an update on the situation at Leverkusen, with the club scrambling to identify replacements for Liverpool-bound Florian Wirtz.

To replace someone of his class, the publication argues that Leverkusen now need to target a 'higher level' of player than before. The young and exciting but still incredibly raw Ibrahim Maza, signed from second-tier Hertha, is simply not ready to fill Wirtz's big shoes.

The report corroborates claims that a move for Garnacho has been discussed, and even states that his wage demands seem reasonable, which goes against what was previously claimed when a January move to Napoli fell through.

The outlet adds that the name of Antony has also been mentioned at Leverkusen, while Rayan Cherki is a name under consideration as well. The problem is that Leverkusen know they likely won't be able to attract this calibre of player if bigger clubs - like Man City in the case of Cherki - come calling.

Leverkusen have been reluctant to spend more than €30m on players in recent years, but it is argued that they need to exceed this internal cap if they want to reach the next level under Ten Hag. Despite this, it seems unlikely that they will spend €60m on Garnacho and €50m on Antony.
