Chelsea have been handed a major boost regarding Levi Colwill, with news that Bayern Munich are now unlikely to sign the Englishman this summer.

Colwill, 21, returned to Stamford Bridge in 2023 after a hugely successful loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion, but he was plagued by injury problems for the majority of his first senior campaign at Chelsea.

Furthermore, the defender was often played out of position by Mauricio Pochettino, and this has sparked news of a possible summer departure.

Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Colwill last year, while Bayern entered the race to sign him earlier this year.

However, Vincent Kompany’s side are now unlikely to pursue Colwill due to the arrival of Hiroki Ito, according to Christian Falk.

The German journalist told CaughtOffside: “It’s true that Bayern Munich had Levi Colwill on the list; his name came up in club discussions because Bayern are searching for a player like him.

“Now they’ve decided to sign Hiroki Ito from Stuttgart, so I don’t think they’ll move for Colwill now.”

Bayern Munich sign Hiroki Ito

As mentioned, Bayern have completed the signing of Stuttgart defender Ito for a fee of €23 million.

In a statement posted on Bayern’s club website, the 25-year-old said: “It’s a great honour for me to be able to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world. FC Bayern is also a big name in Japan.

“I always gave my all for VfB Stuttgart and am grateful to the club. Now I’m looking forward to the challenge in Munich and I want to play my part in FC Bayern winning lots of trophies.

“It was time to take a new step, and for me FC Bayern is the perfect club to do so.”

He is expected to provide competition for Matthijs de Ligt, Dayot Upamecano, Eric Dier and Kim Min-jae.
