Antony told to 'man up' by Man Utd legend

Antony simply 'hasn't been good enough' and 'needs to man up' at Manchester United according to Red Devils legend Dwight Yorke.

Antony joined United from Ajax in a €100 million deal the August before last and had a mixed first season at the club, scoring big goals against Arsenal, Manchester City and Barcelona, but only hitting eight from 44 games in total.

This season he has completed more 360-degree spins than direct goal-involvements, however, with no goals or assists from his 17 appearances not the return on investment United will have been hoping for.

Antony recently implored the club's legends to get behind him and give him advice, but Yorke - who won the continental treble with the club in 1999 - has doubled down.

Yorke: 'He has to be better'

"Everybody's entitled to their opinion, but we need to be frank - Antony just hasn't been good enough," the Trinidadian former forward told InstantCasino.com. "It's all well and good producing the occasional decent performance, but that shouldn't be an acceptable benchmark at Man Utd.

"I appreciate that every player needs time to settle in, but Antony is another player who needs to man up. He needs to blitz down that right-hand side, cut in, assist, and score goals - that's what they paid £85 million for…

"The discussion around Antony becoming an 'OK' footballer is nonsense. He cost £85. He has to be better than that."

Antony is now valued at just €38.8m by FootballTransfers' in-house algorithm, but with a contract that runs until 2027 with an option for another year, hefty wages of £200,000 a week, and a diminishing output, few takers have been linked.

Erik ten Hag seems intent on squeezing other wingers out the club first in any case, with Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood each looking to have played their last games for the club.
