Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester City are in transfer talks with Juventus over a deal for England midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Rarely featuring under Pep Guardiola, the former Leeds star is pushing for a move during the January transfer window to ensure that he is in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.

Newcastle have taken an interest in the player, though there is a suggestion that this will diminish after they were eliminated from Europe entirely, potentially paving the way for Juventus to make a move.

But while football transfer news expert Romano says there are talks over a deal, there are still significant hurdles to overcome for the deal to be completed.

Kalvin Phillips transfer: Romano gives the latest

Romano confirmed on his YouTube channel: “Kalvin Phillips will leave Manchester City. He had some interest in the summer then he decided to stay and fight for his place but he’s not playing and he wants to go to the Euros.

“We know he’s one of the players in the list many clubs, including Newcastle are looking at. But Juventus have now made contact with Manchester City for Kalvin Phillips.

“There is a negotiation. There is a discussion ongoing between Juventus and Man City for Phillips.

“City are insisting on a loan with a mandatory buy clause, so a potentially permanent deal for the summer of 2024. Juventus are offering a loan deal with a buy option that is open.

“The two clubs are speaking to try to find a solution. There’s also the loan fee as part of the discussion. How much of the salary will Juventus cover? That’s another important part of the discussion. But the negotiations are open.

“It’s a concrete name, it’s a concrete discussion and the deal is on. Let’s see what’s going to happen.”

Phillips, who has 31 caps for England, has only played nine matches for City this season, featuring for only 305 minutes.
