Arsenal have told AC Milan that Poland international defender Jakub Kiwior will not leave the club this summer, according to a report in Italy.

The 23-year-old joined up with the Gunners from Spezia in January but has barely featured for Mikel Arteta’s side since that point.

Kiwior has made only eight appearances this season. In total, he has been on the field for only 367 minutes in competitive action, 180 of which came in the EFL Cup encounters versus Brentford and West Ham.

It is against that backdrop that Milan have tried to swoop for the 17-time capped Poland defender, but according to Calciomercato, they have been told by Arsenal that Kiwior will be going nowhere during the January transfer window.

After signing him for €25 million little under a year ago, he remains an important player in the plans of Arteta.

Arsenal suffered last season because of a lack of depth in their squad, and the manager is likely to keep Kiwior as an insurance policy in case anything happens to his players in the closing stages of the season. The Pole, who has at least made the bench for every fixture this term, is particularly important after Kieran Tierney departed the club in the summer on loan to Real Sociedad.

Kiwior interest from Serie A

Kiwior’s stock remains high in Italy thanks to his excellent performances with Spezia.

Indeed, he was earmarked by Milan as a possible replacement for Pierre Kalulu, who is presently out injured. Although primarily a right-back, he can also play centrally, and it is this role that the Rossoneri had wanted Kiwior for.

While Milan have taken an interest in the Pole, Roma are also said to have made a proposal for a loan to sign the player, yet Arsenal have rejected this out of hand for the moment.
