Football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has poured cold water on Liverpool’s hopes of landing Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen with the news that it is “not true” that the Nigeria international has agreed a contract with Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Reports from Italy over the weekend suggested that the Anfield club were closing in on the unsettled forward, but these have been rubbished by Romano.

And this is music to the ears of several leading clubs who are tracking Osimhen, most pertinently Chelsea, who FootballTransfers exclusively revealed last month are still leading the way for the 24-year-old striker.

Romano also suggested that Man Utd’s interest in the player has waned when taking to his YouTube channel.

He explained: “Let me clarify something for you about a video I released couple of days ago about Man Utd negotiating for Osimhen one and a half years ago. There’s now Rasmus Hojlund there at that moment, there was Cristiano Ronaldo at Man Utd at that time, so now they are covered in that position, but Chelsea are still keeping an eye on Victor Osimhen.

“In Italy, some media are reporting that Osimhen has already agreed a contract with Liverpool. From what I’m told at the moment, Osimhen hasn’t agreed anything with any club – not even Napoli.

“There is no agreement on the contract extension. Napoli made a very important proposal to Osimhen in terms of his contract, the biggest in Napoli history, is on the table for him, but nothing is decided with any club. He will take his time.

“Reports that he has already agreed something with Liverpool are not true. For sure Liverpool and many other clubs are keeping an eye on the situation of many situations around Europe.”

Osimhen on the move?

Napoli have clarified that talks with Osimhen are ongoing amid what has been a turbulent period for the striker.

Not only is he presently missing because of injury, but prior to the international break he was involved in TikTok controversy as the club’s official account published videos that appeared to be mocking him.

On top of this, Osimhen was also involved in a touchline spat with Napoli head coach Rudi Garcia as pressure mounts on the club after a slow start to the season has left them fifth in Serie A.
