Brentford were among the many clubs who passed up the chance to sign Mason Greenwood, according to a report.

The disgraced Manchester United forward made a shocking Deadline Day loan switch to Getafe after the Red Devils U-turned on their initial plan to bring him back into the fold. The original idea to reintegrate Greenwood into Erik ten Hag's squad was met with ferocious outrage, as was Getafe's decision to sign him.

Greenwood hasn't kicked a ball in a competitive fixture since his arrest in January 2022 on suspicions of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Despite his exit, Man Utd will continue to pay more than half of his salary and he will return to the club, either in January if Man Utd wish to recall him or in the summer.

Getafe's coach Pepe Bordalas doubled down on the LaLiga side's decision to sign Greenwood, stating: "At this point, this is a situation which is too delicate to speak lightly about. Everyone knows what happened, the necessary measures were taken."

"We can talk about football," he continued. "In other respects, the authorities did what they were obliged to do, and we all know how it turned out. He has been absolved, he is a footballer with huge quality and comes to Getafe with great expectations."

Greenwood snubbed

It has now been revealed by The Athletic that United were desperately trying to offload Greenwood in the final hours of the window and offered him to many clubs, but most declined the chance to sign him.

Among them was Premier League side Brentford. European giants Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan also snubbed Greenwood, according to the report.

Serie A side Lazio, meanwhile, were keen on taking the 21-year-old on board, with club president Claudio Lotito slamming Man Utd after the window closed. "I tried until the last minute," Lotito told La Lazio Siamo Noi. "[Man Utd] didn't countersign in time. He wanted to come to Lazio."
