An €80m bargain? Anthony Gordon joins unique club after latest Barcelona heroics

Anthony Gordon joined a unique club after registering another assist in Barcelona’s 5-0 thrashing of Valencia in La Liga on Sunday.

The 25-year-old teed up Fermin Lopez in the first half as Hansi Flick’s side maintained their 100 per cent start to the 2026-27 season.

Barcelona are already looking ominous in the defence of their league title, having scored 17 goals in just four fixtures in Spain’s top flight.

And one man who has been key to their explosive start is Gordon, who has registered four assists since joining Barcelona from Newcastle United for €80million (£69m) in May.

England star Gordon posted two assists as a second-half substitute in the 5-0 win at Elche in Barcelona’s La Liga opener in August.

In the same month, he teed up Raphinha with a stunning backheel in the 5-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano at Spotify Camp Nou.

And after his heroics against Valencia, Gordon became just the third player this century to record four assists in his opening four La Liga matches.

The other two players were Cesc Fabregas and Luis Suarez, who also achieved the feat with Spanish heavyweights Barcelona.

Gordon will be hoping to continue his fine form when Barcelona return to action against Feyenoord in their Champions League opener on Wednesday.

Fellow new boy Rodri shines on first start

Another Barcelona new boy who caught the eye against Valencia was Rodri, who made his first start for the reigning champions at the Mestalla Stadium.

Fresh from captaining Spain to World Cup glory this summer, Rodri joined the Blaugrana from Manchester City for €76m (£65m) in August.

And in typical Rodri fashion, the midfield metronome was the conductor of the orchestra at Valencia, completing more passes (81/83) than anyone else.

Barcelona head coach Flick was full of praise for the 30-year-old after the game, saying: “Everything that Rodri does with and without the ball on the field makes sense. He gives us structure in the team. He's incredible and [Marc] Bernal is going to learn a lot from him.”
