Fabrizio Romano has revealed why Manchester United's deal to sign Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella collapsed - and that Manchester City had made a 'secret' offer for him.

When Luke Shaw went down with an injury that would keep him out for a decent chunk of the first half of the season, the Red Devils felt compelled to dip into the transfer market for a deputy.

The priority option for Erik ten Hag was Chelsea's Marc Cucurella and talks initially progressed well - until they didn't. The Manchester club insisted on a break clause that would have allowed them to send the Spaniard back to Chelsea in January, but neither the player nor the Blues were keen on that.

According to Fabrizio Romano, this is what doomed the negotiations, but there was more that caused irritation.

What did Romano say?

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed: "The loan deal for Cucurella from Chelsea to Manchester United was almost done...the two clubs were ready to close the deal for [a] £3 million loan fee."

"There were some problems in the negotiations. One of the problems...was about the break clause because Chelsea and [the] player's side both rejected the break clause for the loan deal..."

"Also, Man Utd were not happy with Chelsea playing Marc Cucurella in [the] Carabao Cup game. Why? Because due to the rules, Cucurella was not allowed to play in [the] Carabao Cup anymore with Man Utd in case he was going to join United from Chelsea and this is something that made United not so happy because they wanted to use their new left-back also in the Carabao Cup."

Moreover, Romano revealed that Man City "in a secret way, presented a [loan] proposal for Marc Cucurella" in January 2023. The Italian transfer expert also said that Fulham tried to get in on the act after Cucurella's Man Utd deal collapsed, but that option was never seriously considered by the Spaniard.
