Mikel Arteta is set to lose one of his key backroom staff following news that Gary O’Driscoll is leaving Arsenal to join Manchester United after almost 15 years at the club.

O’Driscoll joined the Gunners as a club doctor in 2009 and was then promoted to the role of Head of Medicine at the club in 2017, a position he has held until now.

However, according to the Training Ground Guru he will leave the club to start a new job at Man Utd on Monday.

O’Driscoll will become Head of Sports Medicine at Old Trafford, with Erik ten Hag snatching a key backroom staff member away from Arteta.

The two clubs recently faced each other in the Premier League, with Arsenal coming away 3-1 winners before the international break.

But, the Gunners have now lost O’Driscoll, who previously worked as Ireland Rugby’s team doctor between 2003 and 2009.

O’Driscoll hails from Manchester and will replace Steve McNally at Old Trafford. McNally left Man Utd in February after 16 years at the club to become a Performance Support Director for the PGMOL. Ex-Liverpool doctor Jim Moxon has been filling in on an interim basis since then, as per the Training Ground Guru.

Man Utd’s summer business

The addition of O’Driscoll to Ten Hag’s backroom staff is the latest addition in a busy summer of arrivals for Man Utd.

In total, the Red Devils spent €196.7 million on new signings, with Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir arriving for a transfer fee. In addition, Jonny Evans re-joined the club on a free transfer from Leicester City, while Sergio Reguilon and Sofyan Amrabat have joined on loan from Tottenham Hotspur and Fiorentina respectively.

The latter’s loan deal can be made permanent in 2024 if Man Utd wish to sign Amrabat, who shone for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup.
