Manchester City are exploring a deal to sign Matheus Nunes from Wolves after their chances of landing Lucas Paqueta were squashed.

David Ornstein reports that the Premier League title holders are looking for a central midfielder to come in to replace the injured Kevin De Bruyne, who could spend up to four months out of action.

The club had looked to Paqueta of West Ham but then it was made known that the Football Association (FA) had started an investigation into the Brazil international over potential betting breaches.

It's reported that the 24-year-old is one of several players who Man City are looking at, with it thought that there is a ‘small pool’ of names, though Nunes is 'high among them.'

But Wolves’ financial position means that they might have to accept sizeable bids for Nunes. They would, in turn, be able to bolster other areas of the pitch deep into the transfer window. The 24-year-old joined Wolves from Sporting Lisbon last summer on a five-year contract with the option of a sixth. And he’s gone on to play 41 games for the Midlands side.

Man City’s long-standing interest in Nunes

FootballTransfers had revealed Man City’s interest in Nunes last summer when he was in Portugal, playing for Sporting CP.

At the time, the club as well as Paris Saint-Germain and of course, Wolves were keen on the move. Nunes has also been linked with a move to Liverpool, another team who liked the player last year.

Liverpool are trying to rebuild for their new season following the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, both of whom left to the Saudi Pro League.
