Chelsea will help fund Manchester City’s next midfield signing due to a sell-on clause in Romeo Lavia’s contract.

Lavia has agreed to join Chelsea from Southampton for a fee that will reach €68 million.

According to the Athletic, Man City have a sell-on clause in Lavia’s Southampton’s contract from when they sold the midfielder to the Saints last year.

The sell-on clause means that Man City will earn 20 per cent of the transfer fee Chelsea pay Southampton.

This translates to just under €14m once add-ons are included.

The money will come in very handy for Man City, who are working on a number of transfer deals right now.

Man City close on Paqueta and Doku

As FootballTransfers exclusively revealed this week, Manchester City are closing in on a sensational double swoop for Lucas Paqueta and Jeremy Doku.

City’s move for West Ham star Paqueta has been accelerated by the serious injury sustained to star man Kevin de Bruyne.

De Bruyne sustained a hamstring injury in the first half of City’s 3-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor on the opening day of the Premier League season last Friday.

The Belgium international will miss four months of action and may even need surgery.

As a result, City will sign a new central midfielder and Paqueta is their priority option. Leipzig star Dani Olmo has also been linked.

Thus, Chelsea have played a role in funding the rest of their summer business by buying Lavia.

The Blues have been busy in the transfer market in recent days, also signing Moises Caicedo from Brighton for a British record fee.
