Chelsea have tied Levi Colwill down to a new contract that will run for six-years until 2029, according to football transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

It is a decisive action that concludes a tug-of-war with the centre-back that the Blues looked destined to lose only a matter of weeks ago.

Liverpool and Brighton were both circling for the 20-year-old Colwill, but Chelsea stood their ground under pressure and have tied the player down on a long-term basis.

Romano took to Twitter in the early hours of Wednesday UK time to report: “Levi Colwill has signed a new long-term Chelsea deal valid until June 2029, as expected.

“Colwill agreed new deal on Monday and documents are now signed.

“Pochettino considers Colwill as one of the most talented centre-backs in Europe.”

Colwill’s Chelsea U-turn

While an extension for Colwill has been on the cards for days now, this was not the case towards the end of the season.

The defender had made it known that he would like to have stayed with Brighton, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell in the second half of last season. Indeed, he even took to Instagram to drop an image of himself and former Chelsea academy product Billy Gilmour out partying to celebrate European qualification when the Blues were losing 4-1 to Manchester United in the Premier League.

The pressure built on Chelsea as Liverpool took an interest in Colwill, but while the Anfield club clearly pushed for a move, Colwill never appeared as close to Jurgen Klopp’s side as he did to Brighton, who continued to be linked with him.

Only when the Seagulls completed a transfer for Fiorentina centre-back Igor, the danger appeared truly gone for Chelsea.

Now Colwill has committed his future to the club, a worrying chapter for Chelsea fans can be closed as Mauricio Pochettino continues his preparations for the Premier League season ahead.
