Arsenal have a busy week in store, with manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu left with numerous questions over the squad. As many as six players are expected to leave before the transfer deadline, with three potential recruits.

Arteta has subtly revolutionised his squad over the summer, with the exit of Kieran Tierney the clearest signal yet that ‘the process’ is clear in the Spaniard’s mind.

The Scotland international may be the most high-profile victim of the evolution of this Arsenal team, but he is certainly not the only one.

Emile Smith Rowe headlines a list of six players with significant questions hanging over their futures this week.

The England international has yet to play a minute this season and appears to have fallen further behind Fabio Vieira in the pecking order after the latter’s dazzling weekend impact against Fulham.

The 23-year-old’s future is arguably the most important issue to resolve as it could unlock potential incomings at Emirates thanks to the transfer windfall it might bring.

In the meantime, Rob Holding, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares are all players who are well capable of earning moves to Premier League teams.

Beyond these four players are two that Arsenal will struggle to shift: Nicolas Pepe and Cedric Soares. It may be that the Saudi Pro League is the best hope for the Gunners to get a fee for either of these players.

Who could Arsenal sign this week?

Arsenal are primarily targeting three positions, but realistically only one, perhaps two, new faces might arrive before the transfer deadline.

The top priority is a full-back to replace Jurrien Timber, who is set to miss much of the season because of injury. Arteta is expected to make a move here, perhaps bringing a young face to the club ahead of schedule.

Secondly, another winger is expected. Had Timber not picked up his injury, this would have been the club’s top priority. A deal is not anticipated here but cannot be ruled out.

Finally, Arsenal are short of a centre forward, although after spending big on Kai Havertz and with Gabriel Jesus on his way back, any movement here is likely to wait until January or perhaps even the summer of 2024.
