Manchester United were in an optimistic mood heading into the 2023/24 season, which was Erik ten Hag’s second with the club.

Article continues under the video

After finishing third in the Premier League and winning the Carabao Cup, Ten Hag was hoping to bring United even closer to treble-winning rivals Manchester City, as they desperately hoped to end a 10-year title drought.

Defeat to Man City in the FA Cup final meant the previous campaign ended on a disappointing note, but overall their first season under new management at Old Trafford could be deemed a success.

Marcus Rashford was the top scorer for Man Utd last season, scoring 17 goals in the Premier League.

Overall, England international Rashford scored a stunning 30 goals in all competitions.

Wayne Rooney was the last Man Utd player to finish as their top goalscorer for two consecutive seasons (in 2013/14 and 2014/15).

So, after signing a new long-term contract, Rashford was aiming to emulate Man Utd's record scorer by making it two scoring crowns in a row in 2023/24. He was expected to face competition from new signing Rasmus Hojlund, who arrived at Old Trafford hoping to bang in the goals after his transfer to United.

Man Utd: Premier League top scorers 2023/24

Manchester United scored 57 goals in their 38 EPL matches this season.

In-form Bruno Fernandes finished joint-top of the Premier League scoring charts for Man Utd with 10 goals, having scored doubles in the 2-2 draw away to Bournemouth and the 4-2 home win over Sheffield United towards the end of the campaign.

Rasmus Hojlund also had 10 goals, with his double against Luton Town in February ensuring he had scored in six consecutive EPL matches.

However, he was then ruled out with an injury to cut short his fine run and took a while to return to those heights since his return. However, goals against Sheff Utd, Newcastle and Brighton did mean he reached 16 goals overall in all competitions.

Scott McTominay was tied for third place in Man Utd's EPL rankings with seven goals, with his most recent being the winner in a key 2-1 win at Aston Villa.

Marcus Rashford recently joined the leading group on seven Premier League goals.

And after scoring twice in the dramatic 4-3 loss to Chelsea, Alejandro Garnacho was also among the leaders with seven strikes.

But in-form Fernandes and Hojlund finished joint top of the top-flight scoring standings, with Bruno having also netted in the dramatic match at Stamford Bridge and striking again in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

McTominay chose the perfect moment to score his first two goals of the season, netting twice with a dramatic stoppage-time double to provide some relief to under-pressure manager Erik ten Hag as Man Utd salvaged a 2-1 win over Brentford on October 7.

The Scotland midfielder was on target again in an away match versus Sheffield United, only to then concede a penalty for handball as Sheff Utd equalised from the spot. But full-back Diogo Dalot found the top corner with a 77th-minute long-range strike. It was only the second Premier League goal of Dalot's career.

McTominay also scored twice in the much-needed 2-1 home victory over Chelsea on December 6, with Fernandes missing a first-half penalty in that game. It took him two months before his next EPL goal, which came in the 4-3 win at Wolves on February 1. That was a game where Kobbie Mainoo scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

It was McTominay's turn to score the winner at Aston Villa on February 11, as he came off the bench to send in a powerful late header as United won 2-1.

As for Fernandes, he scored a fine winner against Burnley on September 23. His volley from an impressive Jonny Evans pass gave the visitors a vital 1-0 win at Turf Moor.

Three of the captain's strikes in 2023/24 have been crucial winners, as he also netted match-winning strikes against Nottingham Forest and Fulham, the former capping a 3-2 home comeback win latter coming in the last minute as United salvaged a 1-0 away triumph.

Rashford scored his first goal of the season against Arsenal on September 3 but was unable to prevent Man United from falling to a 3-1 reverse, with that loss being a painful one that involved late clinching goals for the Gunners.

Last season's top scorer Rashford got his first goal of the 2023/24 campaign in the first half of that game, cutting in from the left to score with a fine finish. But the England star had to wait until November 26 to get his second of the season, netting a penalty in the 3-0 win at Everton. The highlight of that match was a stunning overhead kick from Garnacho.

There was frustration in the last fixture of 2023 as Man Utd fell to a 2-1 defeat away to Nottingham Forest, but the match did at least provide a third goal of the EPL campaign from Rashford.

He then made it two goals in two games with a neat finish in the 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham on January 14, and his resurgence continued with a goal against Wolves. Rashford's most recent goals were a stunning strike in the 3-1 defeat to rivals Man City on March 3 and a penalty against Everton on March 9.

Hannibal Mejbri scored his first goal for the club against Brighton in the closing stages of that contest on September 16, but it did little to lift the mood during a 3-1 home defeat.

Rasmus Hojlund had a goal disallowed in that game, as part of a long wait to get his first EPL goal. It looked like another defeat was on the cards at home to Aston Villa on Boxing Day as Man Utd trailed by two goals, but Garnacho scored twice in the second half before Hojlund finally scored his first league goal to cap a sensational comeback.

After waiting so long for his first goal, a second quickly followed against Tottenham just a few weeks later, while he was also one of four goalscorers against Wolves before continuing his fine form with a strike on his 21st birthday in the 3-0 home win over West Ham on February 4, a result which was sealed by a Garnacho double in the second half.

His strike against Villa meant he had netted in five straight EPL matches and two goals against Luton on February 18 ensured Hojlund became the youngest player in Premier League history to score in six straight games.

On the opening week of the season, Raphael Varane was the unlikely hero for Manchester United as they defeated Wolves 1-0 at Old Trafford.

The goal for Varane was just his second for Man Utd, even though this is his third season with the club. His only other strike had come against Brentford in May 2022 towards the end of his first campaign with the team.

His fellow defender Victor Lindelof netted in a 1-0 win at home against Luton Town. It was the Sweden defender's first goal in almost three years, since a 6-2 win over rivals Leeds United at Old Trafford in December 2020.

United had a poor spell in front of goal before Christmas.

They were unable to score in a dreadful 3-0 home loss against Bournemouth and also failed to find the net at Anfield, the fifth straight away match against rivals Liverpool where they had not struck.

There were hopes that a battling 0-0 draw still represented a step forward after a tumultuous period for the club on and off the pitch. There was little festive cheer after that, though, as Man Utd lost 2-0 at West Ham, meaning they had failed to score in five of their last six matches across all competitions.

Mason Mount, meanwhile, netted his first Man Utd goal in a 1-1 away draw against Brentford, while Amad Diallo got his first goal in the EPL for United with a sweet strike against Newcastle in May.

United ended up with 60 points from 38 matches in the Premier League. There are huge concerns for Ten Hag, whose side have lost 14 EPL games this season and they finished well adrift of the leading sides in the standings. Eighth place is their worst-ever EPL finish.

Man Utd top scorers in all competitions 2023/24

As well as the Premier League, a busy season for Man Utd included them playing in the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

United played 14 matches outside of the EPL, scoring 31 times in total during those fixtures. It meant they netted a total of 88 goals from 50 matches in all competitions.

Rasmus Hojlund finished as the top Man Utd top goalscorer in all competitions with 16 goals, even though he only struck three times since February 13. His lead at the top of the standings looked secure for many months but he was briefly overtaken by Fernandes towards the end of the season. But striking against Newcastle in a 3-2 win that lifted the mood at Old Trafford and netting once more on the final day of the Premier League season did the job, as Man Utd beat Brighton 2-0.

In-form captain Bruno Fernandes finished just behind with 15 goals.

Unusually, the first five of Hojlund's goals were all scored in the Champions League and he did not score in the Premier League until the dramatic win over Aston Villa on December 26.

Scott McTominay, Marcus Rashford and winger Alejandro Garnacho were behind the leaders in the race to be named the top scorer for Man Utd.

McTominay was surprisingly prominent in the standings thanks to his seven Premier League goals, his one strike in the Champions League and two FA Cup goals.

Bruno, meanwhile, had 10 EPL goals, two in the UCL and another three in the FA Cup.

Seven of Rashford's eight strikes were Premier League goals, while seven of the 10 netted by Garnacho came in league play.

It was a thriller as United ultimately lost 4-3 to Bayern Munich in Germany to kick off their Champions League campaign.

Hojlund scored his first goal for the club in the second half, meaning he did not have to wait long to open his account after having a strike ruled out against Brighton in his first start a few days earlier. As the match opened up in the closing stages, Casemiro was the surprise scorer of a double for Man Utd.

Casemiro scored again as Man Utd comfortably defeated Crystal Palace 3-0 in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford and netted a late winner in the 1-0 FA Cup win at Nottingham Forest.

He was briefly top of the club's scoring charts early in the season and he has now reached five strikes overall. Casemiro's goals have been an unexpected bonus since he signed from Real Madrid. The holding midfielder scored seven times last season too.

Hojlund was the top performer against Galatasaray in Matchday 2 of the Champions League. He scored twice at Old Trafford, but Man Utd still suffered a desperately disappointing 3-2 defeat.

Man Utd battled to a 1-0 home win over Copenhagen in MD3 of the UCL, with Harry Maguire scoring a decisive second-half header. The centre-back's goal was his first since February 2022 against Leeds United.

It was not a convincing win for United, who needed a dramatic stoppage-time penalty save from Andre Onana to preserve the three points.

United's next match outside of Premier League competition was the tame 3-0 EFL Cup defeat at home to Newcastle United.

And their match after that did not go much better. Once again, Hojlund scored twice in a Champions League defeat. Fernandes was also on target with a penalty, but Man Utd still lost 4-3 to Copenhagen in Denmark as Marcus Rashford was sent off, leaving their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.

There was more Champions League drama in MD5. Despite scoring three goals through Garnacho, Fernandes and McTominay, it was still not enough as Man Utd failed to record a victory. They twice lost two-goal leads and had to settle for a 3-3 draw away to Galatasaray.

On December 12, a 1-0 home loss to Bayern on MD6 sealed their exit from the competition, with United unable to even claim a third-place finish that would have given them the consolation prize of a Europa League spot.

After early exits in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, the pressure was on for Man Utd in the FA Cup, a campaign which they started with a 2-0 away third-round win over Wigan Athletic. Diogo Dalot opened the scoring before Fernandes sealed the victory with a penalty he had won himself.

There was a dramatic 4-2 win away to Newport County in round four. Fernandes and Hojlund added to their goal tallies in that game on January 28, but most notable was the first Man Utd goal for young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and a first strike of the season for Antony.

Man Utd beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 in round five to book a quarter-final tie with Liverpool.

And that tie on March 17 was a classic encounter, with Man Utd eventually emerging with a 4-3 triumph after extra time. McTominay, Antony and Rashford had all scored before Amad Diallo chose the perfect moment to grab his first goal of the season with a dramatic last-gasp winner.

There was arguably even more drama in the last four, as Man Utd ultimately prevailed on penalties against Championship side Coventry City.

Goals from McTominay, Maguire and Fernandes appeared to have United in complete control at Wembley, but they then conceded three times in the last 19 minutes as the match moved to extra-time, where Ten Hag's men survived a major scare when Coventry had a goal ruled out by VAR before somehow steadying themselves to win the shoot-out.

They then played rivals Man City in the FA Cup final to finish the season with a stunning high, winning 2-1 at Wembley. Garnacho scored the opening goal to ensure he hit double figures to cap a fine season, while Mainoo got what proved to be the decisive second goal as part of a man-of-the-match display.

Man Utd next fixtures

It was a disappointing season for everyone at Man Utd, including the club's attacking stars who floundered, particularly in the Premier League.

Time was running out for the United players if they want to salvage a European place, something which was pivotal after their early UCL and Carabao Cup exits. They were unable to do that through their top-flight finish, ending up in eighth, their worst result in the Premier League era. However, their campaign was somewhat salvaged with an unexpected win over Man City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

It was certainly an up-and-down end to the campaign, with Ten Hag's future still uncertain.

A home loss to Fulham in late February and a derby defeat to Man City piled the pressure back onto to Ten Hag. United did earn a 2-0 win over Everton on March 9 to consolidate a position in the top six and their stunning FA Cup quarter-final win over Liverpool breathed new life into their season.

However, the first match after the international break was fairly lacklustre, as Man Utd drew 1-1 away to Brentford and then they lost a late lead against Chelsea, going down to a miserable 4-3 defeat at Stamford Bridge. A 2-2 draw against Liverpool was entertaining, but again saw Man Utd concede a late goal, while they were also unable to win at Bournemouth, again drawing 2-2.

The FA Cup semi-final versus Coventry and the home league win against Sheffield United were hardly convincing either, but United were able to win those matches. The poor form continued, though, with a 1-1 draw against Burnley at Old Trafford and subsequent losses to Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

United lifted the mood slightly with a 3-2 home win over Newcastle United on Wednesday May 15, and then ended the EPL campaign with a 2-0 win at Brighton.

Man Utd fixtures for 2023/24 then concluded with their last match of the season, which was also their biggest game of the campaign.

Man Utd played the crucial FA Cup final against rivals Man City on Saturday May 25, with Garnacho and Mainoo scoring in a surprise 2-1 win.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the previous Man Utd attacker to have scored more than 40 goals in a season. He had 42 in 2007-08 as the club won the Premier League and Champions League trophies. Ronaldo had 31 EPL goals that year, which is the club record in that competition.

Ruud van Nistelrooy scored 44 goals in 2002-03 but the all-time single-season record is held by Denis Law, who scored 46 goals in 1963–64.

Even though his time at Man Utd has been heavily impacted by injuries, Anthony Martial has been the top scorer twice.

The prolific Van Nistelrooy was top of the Man Utd scoring charts in four separate seasons, which is the same total achieved by Ronaldo. CR7 did it three times in his first spell at the club, and was then top scorer in 2021/22 after returning to Old Trafford.

But it is Rooney who fares best. He topped the Manchester United scoring charts six times.
