Mason Mount is a ‘game-changing’ signing for Manchester United, according to MUTV commentator Ben Thornley.

The former Old Trafford winger has spoken up the former Chelsea man, saying that though his addition to the side was a ‘surprise’, he believes the England international has the tools to become a superb player under Erik ten Hag.

Thornley said exclusively to FootballTransfers: “Mason Mount was somewhat of a surprise. He needs to get back to the player he was in his first two full seasons at Chelsea last year. Especially post-World Cup where he hardly got a sniff in a side who had a particularly poor season.

“He was their best player in each of those seasons with his running with and without the ball; his assists and his goals and his all-round creativity were sublime.

“If Man Utd get that player back then we will have one hell of an asset. He’s someone who can change a game. Not sure where Erik ten Hag wants to deploy him to get the best out of him - I feel when Bruno is moved into the wider positions we lose something. Also, there may also be less game time with Mount with Christien Eriksen?”

After lots of rumours linking Mount to Liverpool, the player joined Man Utd in the summer after Chelsea accepted a deal worth £55million plus £5m in add-ons.

He said via the Mirror: “I'm really happy to have him here. I think it's been quite nice for the new lads to come in because sometimes in the past they've come in after the tour and I think the tour is a good time to come [into the squad] because we're all together a lot.

“So it's nice for them to be with the lads and the staff and integrate and get to know everyone a bit more than when you're just at the training ground.”
