Manchester City and Arsenal could once again face up against each other, this time in the transfer market, with both clubs reportedly pursuing a move for Barcelona winger Raphinha.

The Premier League duo were neck and neck in the race for the title last season and they are now expected to battle it out to sign Raphinha, with City expected to make a move for the Brazilian to replace Riyad Mahrez.

Mahrez has agreed terms with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli and a bid of €20 million has been made, with the 32-year-old’s exit likely to facilitate a move for Raphinha.

City have ‘prioritised’ the Barca man, according to French outlet Foot Mercato, but reports have suggested that they could face competition from Arsenal, who have been long-time admirers of the 26-year-old.

Raphinha turned down Arsenal to join Barca last summer for €58m but his first season in Spain was mixed and the La Liga outfit are willing to listen to offers for him as they look to solve their ongoing financial issues.

Barca need to raise €60m by the end of August in order to register their new signings and, with Chelsea also credited with an interest along with Saudi Arabian sides, Raphinha is seen as a prime candidate to be sold.

What does the future hold for Raphinha?

Raphinha’s profile is said to appeal to City boss Pep Guardiola, while contact has been made between director Txiki Begiristain and Barca chief Deco over a move.

However, Arsenal have also remained in touch with the player’s representatives, having reportedly tried to sign him in January, and any progress over a deal with City would likely pique the Gunners’ interest.

Raphinha is thought to be keen to remain at Barca but a move to City could prove a tempting proposition compared to the interest from other sides.

Arsenal are looking to sign another right-sided forward to compete with Bukayo Saka but any further deals will likely hinge on outgoing deals, with Mikel Arteta’s side having spent more money than any other team so far this summer.
