Liverpool are close to completing an agreement with RB Leipzig that will see Fabio Carvalho leave the Anfield club on loan, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Crucially, there will be no purchase option in the temporary deal, indicating that Liverpool still see the future of the 20-year-old being at Anfield.

The agreement should be completed imminently, with the winger set to become Liverpool's second major youngster to be shipped out on a temporary basis for the 2023/24 season, following Calvin Ramsay’s switch to Preston North End.

Carvalho’s difficult first season at Liverpool

Carvalho joined the Reds last summer from Fulham in a deal worth a reported £5 million in terms of the upfront fee, with this potentially rising to £7.7m via bonuses.

His first campaign at Anfield, though, did not go according to plan. He managed only 638 minutes of competitive action for the Reds, while he played only 11 Premier League minutes after featuring in 11 of Liverpool’s first 12 matches of the campaign.

He faced intense competition for a place on the left of the attack, with Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and even Darwin Nunez all capable of filling that berth for Klopp’s side. It was the decision to sign Gakpo from PSV in January, though, that has ultimately forced Carvalho out of the club for the next year.

Despite this comparative disappointment, he saw his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) grow from €6m (£5m) when Liverpool bought him to €19m (£16.3m) currently.

RB Leipzig will be hoping that they can get the Portugal U21 international to rediscover the type of level he showed at Fulham, which enticed Liverpool to buy him in the first place.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will also be hoping that the youngster can show his worth in the Bundesliga as they clearly have high hopes for him. Carvalho remains under contract at Liverpool until 2027.
