The attacker told PSG that he does not want to extend his contract beyond 2024, meaning it is likely he will be sold this summer.

Chelsea and Manchester City looked at the player last year, but Pep Guardiola’s men have since signed Erling Haaland.

Real Madrid would appear to be the favourites and reports have suggested as such. Erik ten Hag’s side is another option as they are in the hunt for a world-class No.9

Indeed, in a potentially huge shake-up of the transfer market, it means that the Ligue 1 champions could seriously entertain offers for Mbappe over the next couple of months to avoid losing him for nothing.

Per Fabrizio Romano, Mbappe has told PSG that he doesn’t intend to trigger the option of an extra year on top of his current deal.

Romano adds that unless PSG can convince Mbappe to agree on an extension now, it is possible that he will be sold.

And one club likely to be particularly interested in the 2018 World Cup winner’s situation are Real Madrid: Los Blancos have tried to sign Mbappe in the past – and are currently in the market for a new elite striker after Karim Benzema’s shock decision to join Al-Ittihad.

Whether Mbappe’s contract contains any kind of release clause is unclear – but it’s fair to say that if PSG do find themselves in the less-than-ideal position of having to sell him, they will demand a hefty fee.

Indeed, his €135m move from Monaco five years ago ranks as the second-most expensive transfer of all time – eclipsed only by teammate Neymar’s €222m switch from Barcelona a year earlier.

With Lionel Messi already heading Stateside to join Inter Miami, Neymar reportedly wanted in the Saudi Pro League, and Mbappe’s apparent decision, it could be a rather cataclysmic summer for PSG.
