Southampton’s demotion from the English top-flight was already long since established. They have finished bottom of the Premier League, ending an 11-year run in England’s highest division.

Going into the final day of the Premier League season, there was a three-way fight between Leicester, Leeds and Everton for the other two relegation spots.

Everton started the day in 17th, one place outside the drop zone, on 33 points. Leicester were in 18th on 31 points and Leeds in 19th on the same number of points but a far inferior goal difference.

Thus, Everton knew that a victory at home to Bournemouth would guarantee safety. Leicester needed to beat West Ham at home, and hope Everton slipped up. Leeds, meanwhile, needed a minor miracle. They had to beat Tottenham at home and and hope Everton lost, and Leicester failed to win.

As it turned out Leeds were hammered 4-1, meaning they finished 19th. Leicester won 2-0 but that was not enough to save them as Everton won their game 1-0.

Thus, Leicester and Leeds joined Southampton in the English Championship. Leicester return to the second division for the first time in nine years, while Leeds are back there after three years.

Which teams have been promoted to Premier League

The three teams who have been promoted to the 2023-24 Premier League are Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town.

Burnley were the runaway winners of the EFL Championship, gaining 101 points.

Sheffield United finished second on 91 points to take the other automatic promotion place.

Luton Town completed a fairytale promotion through the playoffs, beating Coventry City on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Wembley.

It was a miraculous journey for Luton who gained four promotions in under a decade after being outside of the Football League for five seasons.
