Liverpool plot SHOCK move for World Cup winner

Liverpool are looking for a new backup for Alisson, and the player they have identified is surprising, to say the least.

The goalkeeping department at Anfield is set to undergo some changes this summer. Adrian's contract is expiring and Caoimhin Kelleher is attracting plenty of interest, including from fellow Premier League side Brentford.

The Reds are, therefore, in the market for a new shot-stopper to play number two to Brazil star Alisson. Jurgen Klopp and the reportedly incoming new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke are said to be looking to their native Germany for someone to bring in, and they have reportedly identified a World Cup-winning goalkeeper who has been linked with Liverpool several times before.

A medal despite not playing

The player in question is Ron-Robert Zieler, who was part of the Germany squad that won the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, though he did not get on the pitch. Now plying his trade in the 2. Bundesliga, the former Leicester and Manchester United man is on the radar of Klopp and company - again.

Already in January, there were rumours that the 34-year-old was being eyed by Liverpool, and indeed Scouse interest in the German dates back all the way to 2013 when they were searching for a replacement for Pepe Reina.

A talented but error-prone shot-stopper, Zieler would be a more than capable backup seeing as though he is still one of the better goalkeepers in Germany's second division.

What makes the German so attractive to Liverpool is the fact that he qualifies as a homegrown due to the years he spent in Manchester United's youth system.

Journalist David Lynch has confirmed Liverpool's reignited interest in the Hannover 96 man, but since he is still under contract, the Reds will have to pay a fee. Given his age, however, that sum will likely be trivial.
