Granit Xhaka has promised Arsenal fans that they will know where his future lies before the Gunners’ final game of the season, amid speculation over a move to Bayer Leverkusen.

Sunday’s home clash with Wolves could see the midfielder make his final appearance for the club, with Leverkusen said to be closing in on a deal.

Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this month that the Bundesliga outfit were about to agree a €15m deal for the Swiss international.

And Xhaka himself might just have dropped a big hint that he will be departing the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Speaking to the Evening Standard after Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday – the result which mathematically ended the Gunners’ already faint Premier League title hopes, confirming Manchester City as champions – the 30-year-old said:

“You will know latest next week, for sure … I think [the fans] deserve that as well and I do myself as well. We have one more week of this Premier League season; the first thing is I want to enjoy [it] and for sure you guys will know next week what happens with my future.”

An Arsenal legend?

Xhaka joined Arsenal from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016 and has gone on to make almost 300 appearances for the club.

A rather abrasive figure on the pitch at times, his Gunners career looked like it might have been over in 2019 when he was stripped of the captain’s armband after swearing at supporters who booed him off the pitch as he was substituted.

But Xhaka has bounced to back to reassert himself as one of Arsenal’s key men, playing an integral role this term for Mikel Arteta’s side – who have secured the club’s best league finish since the Arsene Wenger era.
