Bayern Munich chief Oliver Kahn has admitted that his club considered the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer but decided against it in the end.

Ronaldo was eager to leave Manchester United throughout the summer, as he wanted to be at a club where he could compete for trophies and enjoy Champions League football, something he felt wasn’t possible at Old Trafford.

However, no move came around, and despite some interest from various sides across Europe, he ended up staying at Manchester United and has played the start of the season there.

Now, it’s emerged that Bayern Munich considered the possibility of signing Ronaldo, but it was only a brief consideration as they quickly rejected the idea.

Kahn says Bayern discussed Ronaldo idea

Speaking to Bild, Kahn spoke about the idea, believing it would be great for the league on a wider scale but that wasn’t enough to convince them to make a move for the Portuguese star.

"We talked briefly about Cristiano at Bayern and probably also at Dortmund. We also see the big picture in the Bundesliga and an important factor in drawing attention to the league is of course superstars like him.

“He is one of the greatest of the last decade, but we quickly wrote him off," he concluded, as Bayern Munich carried on with their current forward options.

It’s believed that Ronaldo will be allowed to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window and is hoping for a good World Cup performance to attract more suitors for a possible transfer.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, lost Robert Lewandowski in the summer and wanted a more streamlined attack, getting in goals from various sources to help their cause.

They signed Sadio Mane, but despite blips this season, they have been getting back into the groove of scoring with the likes of Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane all impressing in recent weeks.
