Cristiano Ronaldo moved back to Manchester United last summer because he believed he would be competing for the Premier League title, according to reports.

Ronaldo is continuing to plan his exit from Old Trafford as the 37-year-old looks to find himself a Champions League club ahead of deadline day.

Napoli have been linked regularly while Sporting are still looking to structure a deal which would bring him back to his first club.

And reports published in The Times today suggest that Ronaldo feels that he was lured back to Manchester until false pretences.

The report suggests that Ronaldo was promised that the team was ready to challenge for the Premier League title and that he was the missing piece of the puzzle.

Ronaldo was however shocked when he was forced to carry a huge part of the goalscoring burden for the team, including several winning goals in the Champions League.

And when the team subsequently didn't qualify for the Champions League, Ronaldo felt put out that despite his efforts he was forced to take a 25% pay cut.

Ronaldo unaware of Man Utd problems?

The question is - how could Ronaldo have been so blind to the problems taking place at Manchester United?

This did not begin when he arrived - the issues had been systemic for some time and anyone with any finger on the pulse would have been aware of the situation.

It could be more likely that Ronaldo himself saw fit to play the role of saviour; the returning hero who could restore United back to the big time, only to realise the task was far bigger than he ever imagined.

And the fat pay packet likely helped soften the blow, but now that has been reduced, and the Champions League is not an option, it all adds up to why Ronaldo is seeking a route of the club.
