Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek was expected to be a leading performer at Old Trafford when he arrived from Ajax, but he has faded into the background at the Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag’s arrival as manager this summer might have been expected to finally bring the best out of the Netherlands international midfielder, yet he remains on the periphery of the squad, with Scott McTominay and Fred still ahead of him in the pecking order, and Christian Eriksen and Casemiro having arrived for him to fight past.

Van de Beek has played just 19 minutes for Man Utd this season, proving that his expected revival under Ten Hag simply hasn’t happened. And what’s worse, his status in the club has fallen. He did not appear on the match sheet for recent fixtures against Arsenal, Real Sociedad and Sheriff, having been an unused substitute in the two previous games.

With Ten Hag doubtless still mulling over the prospect of adding Frenkie de Jong to Man Utd’s ranks in January, Van de Beek is wasting his career at Old Trafford and at 25 should be pushing to leave.

Inter's Van de Beek transfer interest

A potential exit route for him in January has arrived in the form of Inter, according to Fichajes.

The Serie A side are looking to bolster their midfield and it is said that Van de Beek could be a “low cost” alternative to Sergej Milikovic-Savic.

Of course, all this is relative. Van de Beek is still valued at €25 million by FootballTransfers, while Man Utd would try to extract the maximum for his talent. Milinkovic-Savic, who has been a pivotal player at Lazio for many years, is priced at €37m, although the Rome side were thought to be asking for around €50m for him in August.

By January, meanwhile, it may have got to the stage it is simply best for Man Utd and Van de Beek to cut their losses. He has a deal that runs until 2025, but having the Netherlands midfielder sitting in the stands is doing no one any good right now.
