Cristiano Ronaldo would likely prefer Manchester United to make a move for Barcelona forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang than Marko Arnautovic, in the opinion of CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs, who writes for FootballTransfers that the call could be decisive in keeping the Portuguese at Old Trafford.

The Arnautovic track appears to have gone dead thanks to protests from within the club, and Jacobs believes that is a positive sign for Ronaldo and his future, with the former Arsenal captain another player they have been tracking over the course of the summer.

Aubameyang possibilities

Barcelona are open to loaning Aubameyang out. Chelsea explored that deal but they haven’t moved on it, so there could be a window for Manchester United there.

A move for Arnautovic might actually have a dual effect. It might bring Manchester United one name, while further forcing Ronaldo out and solidifying his desire not to stay at the club, and that desire is strong.

If they bring in a short-term experienced name, like, for instance, an Aubameyang, where does that leave the future of Cristiano Ronaldo? Is this based solely upon Martial being out? Is it based upon Greenwood not being available for selection – and rightly so – at the moment? What does Ronaldo do?

So, one signing could affect another and, I think that Manchester United are in big trouble at the moment: they need something through the door, even if it’s not an out-and-out striker. They need a win in the transfer market.

Aubameyang would be a bit more sensible than Arnautovic if they proceed, but we will wait and see.

We’re at the stage of the window now where there doesn’t look to be too much strategy behind what they’re doing.
