Why didn’t Man Utd try to sign Moussa Dembele?

Lyon forward Moussa Dembele could be set for a return to England this summer with the French side considering cashing in on a player entering the final year of his contract.

Despite Lyon finishing seventh, Dembele was among the top scorers in Ligue 1 this year, netting 21 goals, nine of which came in the final seven games of the season.

The 25-year-old's form combined with Lyon's failure to secure continental football next season, has prompted speculation around his future and the French side may take advantage of the situation.

Dembele qualifies as a homegrown player in England after beginning his professional career at Fulham and the Frenchman has attracted the interest of Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham.

How much will Dembele cost?

Lyon are rumoured to be willing to accept a fee of around €25 million for Dembele as they are keen to get a fee for a player who will likely leave on a free next summer.

The club had previously set an asking price of €33m last summer while he was on loan at Atletico Madrid but he was convinced to spent another season in France instead.

Dembele ended the campaign as Lyon's captain and was the third top scorer in Ligue 1 despite missing around 10 weeks through injury.

He has scored 53 goals in 106 games since joining Lyon from Celtic for a fee of €22m in 2018, however he failed to score in seven games for Atletico last season.

The former French Under-21 international is reportedly happy to see out his contract with Lyon although the club may be forced to sell him in order to raise funds.
