Chelsea legend John Terry has admitted that his dream is to manage the men's senior squad one day.

Having spent 19 years at Stamford Bridge as a player, winning several trophies such as the 2012 Champions League, he is now part of the backroom staff.

This comes after a spell as assistant manager to Dean Smith at Aston Villa, where he helped the Midlands club to promotion from the Championship.

He left the Villains last July in favour of a return to Chelsea, in the capacity of coaching consultant.

And now, the 41-year-old plans to work his way up the ladder at the west London club.

''Yeah, that’s my dream," Terry told Stadium Astro. ''Obviously, when you’re a kid you want to play in the first team. As a coach, I’ve shifted this way now.

''The long-term ambition and goal is to be Chelsea manager, of course. That feels a little bit funny saying that because someone’s in the job and listen, we are still talking 10,15 years down the line maybe.

''But I have to have an end goal and that’s it. It’s my dream. Hopefully, it happens. I’m on the process of doing that but a lot of things in between that have to go very well for me.

''So, I’m being very patient in the decisions I’m making in my next step in terms of management.

''But being back at Chelsea is very pleasing for me. It was quite emotional when I first drove in.''

Would Chelsea appoint Terry after Lampard disaster?

Frank Lampard's tenure as Chelsea has become somewhat underrated. Prior to the 2019/20 season, the majority of people had the Blues down to finish outside of the top four in the Premier League.

Yet, while bringing through a number of talented young players from the academy, the current Everton boss managed to secure fourth position.

But, the following season turned out to be a disaster, with Lampard failing to get the best out of his many expensive summer acquisitions. This was due to a lack of experience.

But, if Terry is willing to stay patient and wait until he is genuinely qualified for the Chelsea job, there is no reason why he shouldn't be appointed.

Add to that, the next owners are probably not going to be as ruthless as Roman Abramovich, so he could be afforded plenty more time to work things out.
