Tottenham sit eighth in the Premier League table and are in need of a spark, so much so that the club’s directors are to meet this Sunday to discuss the possible sacking of Nuno Espírito Santo. A bitterly disappointing 3-0 defeat to Manchester United might prove to be Nuno’s last game, although there have also been reports suggesting he’ll be given until next weekend’s Everton match to turn things around.

Either way, Nuno’s situation is not good and it would surprise nobody if the Portuguese coach is sacked. If that happens, Spurs will launch a new search for a manager and they could knock again on one of the doors they tried in the summer. They could, according to Alfredo Pedullà, try for Antonio Conte.

Conte didn’t come in the summer, but Spurs might try again

When Ryan Mason’s interim stint in the dugout came to an end at the close of the 2020/21 season, Tottenham had other preferences ahead of Nuno. One of them was Conte, but the Italian wasn’t interested in taking the job.

Now, though, Tottenham hope Conte will reconsider. The former Chelsea boss had been seriously linked with the potential Manchester United vacancy, but Saturday’s result means that Tottenham could have a head coach opening first. If Conte wants a return to the Premier League, he might have to accept the Spurs job if he wants employment soon.

Tottenham’s sporting director Fabio Paratici has a good relationship with Conte from their time together at Juventus and the hope is that he might be able to convince the 52-year-old.

Conte’s Premier League record

From his successful time at Chelsea, Spurs are well aware of how quickly Conte can turn a struggling Premier League team into a winning one. The Italian spent the 2016/17 and 2017/18 campaigns at Chelsea and won the Premier League title in his first season of English football. His overall record at Chelsea was 54 wins from 84 matches coached, with 13 draws and 17 defeats.

It’s clear to see why Conte would be an attractive option for Tottenham. But, they need to convince the tactician that they can be the right next step for him.
