Edinson Cavani could be on his way from Manchester United to Barcelona in January.

The deal is a more realistic one for Barca to complete than a move for Manchester City attacker Ferran Torres, whose €60 million price tag appears to be well out of their price range, despite repeated reports in the press that the Spaniard is Xavi’s leading target.

Cavani, meanwhile, has found himself down the Man Utd pecking order since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, while he has experienced a stop-start season at Old Trafford because of injury issues.

Loaded with offensive options, Man Utd are ready to offload the 34-year-old.

What Barca will pay Cavani

Barcelona are in dire need of a centre-forward. Martin Braithwaite is out long term but more pertinently they have lost their leading No.9 in the form of Sergio Aguero, who was forced to retire because of heart issues earlier this week.

Aguero’s decision to quit the game has opened space on the wage bill and roster that Cavani can fill.

The Argentine recouped a salary of close to €10m annually, and though his Uruguayan successor will not earn that, he will still earn a lucrative salary.

Indeed, TyCSports reports that Cavani has already agreed an 18-month contract with the Camp Nou side.

AS, meanwhile, states that Cavani will receive €3m between January and June, will then earn €4m for the final year of his contract. These figures can both be supplemented by performance-related bonuses.

For Cavani, meanwhile, this will represent a substantial drop from the €15m he earns with Man Utd, though it may be that the Old Trafford club top up his wage somewhat in order to get him off the payroll.

Of course, after an illustrious career, it may be that Cavani is simply happy to be playing football and would be content to take a substantial wage cut to play for Barcelona.
