He will sign a new contract until 2029 and will receive a pay increase from €6 million a season to €7m plus bonuses.

This comes as a big blow to Man Utd, who had earmarked Barella as an ideal target for the centre of midfield this summer.

The Italy international is widely regarded as one of the best in Europe in his role as a box-to-box all-action midfielder.

A number of top Premier League clubs already made moves for him in the summer of 2023, including Chelsea and Man City, but Inter made it clear they had no intention of selling.

Barella and his family are life-long supporters of Inter and he has a special affinity with the club.

He is expected by many to finish his career at San Siro.
