The England youth international has become the Blues' priority target for the left-wing position in recent times, and Chelsea have now moved to act on their interest.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Chelsea have placed their first formal bid for the Borussia Dortmund attacker, who is understood to be determined to leave the Bundesliga side.

In fact, Chelsea have already managed to agree personal terms with Gittens. The 20-year-old will sign a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge should a club-to-club agreement be reached.

Gittens is keen to make the move to Chelsea and is said to be only giving consideration to the West London club at present.

Chelsea bid for Gittens

Ornstein did not reveal how much Chelsea are offering for Gittens, who is thought to have a release clause in the region of €60 million at Borussia Dortmund.

Meanwhile, Ben Jacobs and Fabrizio Romano report that the bid is in the region of €35m, with the latter stating that it exceeds that figure. Both are emphasising that no agreement between the two clubs has as yet been reached.

It remains to be seen if that offer will be enough to sway Dortmund. The German side demanded a whopping €100m for Gittens in the January transfer window.

However, a form slump and subsequent lack of minutes under new head coach Niko Kovac saw Gittens' value diminish, hence Chelsea's relatively low offer. Dortmund will likely try to get a figure closer to €45m or €50m for their talented youngster.

As things stand, it is unclear if Chelsea will be able to thrash out a deal before the Club World Cup deadline on June 10. Should they manage to strike a deal after the initial window closes, they could still register him for the knockout stages if they get that far in the tournament.
