Rangers manager Danny Rohl knows that sales will be as important as signings in January as he begins the task of shaping the Ibrox side’s squad in his form.

Although the Gers invested heavily in the summer, their signings have looked largely well short of the required standard almost to a man. Many will find themselves already on the transfer list after just a few difficult months at Ibrox.

Winger Djeidi Gassama is one player who is liable to depart imminently. Although he started excellently with Rangers following a €2.4 million move from Sheffield Wednesday, his level has dipped dramatically, yet that has not stopped “strong interest” coming from Villarreal.

The La Liga side are on the hunt for a new winger in January and have Gassama on their shortlist along with Sani Suleiman.

Transfer expert Rudy Galetti claims Villarreal are “ready to move” for the 22-year-old winger, who has been identified as the dynamic, fast and creative player they need to elevate their side.

Why Rangers could sell Djeidi Gassama already

Gassama started brilliantly at Rangers, where he has six goals and two assists for the season, but has since faded.

This could fuel a sale, particularly since Findlay Curtis has looked bright when given opportunities to play off the bench. The academy product was a rare bright spot for Rangers in the loss against Ferencvaros in the Europa League on Thursday.

Another factor that could prompt Rangers to sell is the fact that Gassama is one of the few assets they have that can easily be transformed into a profit.

Indeed, the Gers stand to more than double their money on the PSG academy product, whose Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) has more than doubled to €5.1m since he arrived from Wednesday.

No doubt there are players the bosses at Ibrox would rather axe – Youssef Chermiti, for example – but finding suitable buyers for these out-of-form and out-of-confidence stars will not be easy.

Gassama, on the other hand, remains in demand, and with the Frenchman not essential to Rohl’s plans, he could be sacrificed for the greater good.
