Rangers rocked as West Ham target dream Russell Martin replacement
Rangers have been handed a major blow in their search for a possible Russell Martin replacement following news that West Ham United are also monitoring a potential move for Sean Dyche.
Martin, 39, is under immense pressure at Ibrox after failing to secure a win in his first five Scottish Premiership fixtures in charge, and fans are already desperate for him to be sacked after their worst start to a season in 47 years.
It’s understood that Rangers retain faith in the ex-Southampton boss, however Martin has lost the support of the club’s fanbase and he is expected to be sacked if results fail to significantly improve soon.
Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh has travelled from the USA to Glasgow to take “full control” of the current crisis at Ibrox, as per The Scottish Sun, and Martin’s position as head coach is likely to be high on his agenda.
A number of candidates have been linked with possibly replacing Martin at Rangers, including Sean Dyche, who has been out of work since being sacked by Everton in January.
A report from TEAMtalk claims that Rangers’ ownership group aren’t interested in appointing Dyche due to his pragmatic style of play, but rumours of a move to Ibrox have intensified in recent days and he is seen as one of the more likely candidates to succeed Martin.
However, Rangers will face immense competition for Dyche’s signature as he is on West Ham’s shortlist amid their search for a potential replacement for Graham Potter, as per Glasgow World.
Nuno Espirito Santo and Slaven Bilic have also been linked with the role, although Dyche is certainly on West Ham’s radar and Rangers could therefore be forced to battle for his signature in the coming days.
Sean Dyche to Rangers?
When asked who Rangers should appoint if they decide to sack Martin, ex-Scotland international Kris Boyd told Sky Sports: “Steven Gerrard's a name that's never gone away. Frank Lampard's name was another one that was mentioned. I know he's doing some wonderful things at Coventry City, but is that out of the equation now?
“The obvious one for me would be Sean Dyche. Kevin Thelwell worked with him in the past, and he seems to have a lot of say in the players that are coming in.
“So if that relationship with Dyche is still there, he would be someone that I would maybe look to because he's shown that he can build football clubs up. And right now, Rangers need a strong character that's going to build it not only on the pitch, but off the pitch at the training centre.
“It just seems to be so broken, disjointed, and they're going to have to find a way to fix it.”
