PSG announce six new contracts including Luis Enrique in huge boost

PSG have sent a message to their Champions League rivals by announcing a staggering six new contracts in one official announcement – including manager Luis Enrique.

The reigning European Cup winners might have suffered a 2-1 loss to Monaco on Friday before the defence of their title begins with a home encounter against Slovan Bratislava on Tuesday, but the long-term health of the side looks positive as half a dozen key figures committed themselves to the club until at least 2030.

As well as head coach Luis Enrique, PSG have announced that Senny Mayulu, Fabian Ruiz, Willian Pacho, Joao Neves and Lucas Baraldo have all agreed new deals with the club.

Furthermore, the general belief is that a deal with Ousmane Dembele is well on track to be signed by the Ballon d’Or winner, with talks over a contract for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia expected to end with a resolution before the end of October.

By tying down seven first-team players in what was already a close-knit squad, the Parisians would therefore be guaranteeing the core of their Champions League-winning squad for the foreseeable future.

Newfound stability key to PSG’s European success

PSG was a club once synonymous with drama and upheaval, yet it has benefited in recent seasons from the steady and measured leadership of Luis Enrique but also sporting director Luis Campos.

The Spaniard has elected to work with a purposefully small first-team squad, supplemented by promising young players, and this appears to have forged a unity that was not evident at the club during the era of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi.

Bradley Barcola was the only major first-team figure sold during the summer, with the winger heading to Liverpool in a record €120 million sale, while youngster Ibrahim Mbaye and fringe players Goncalo Ramos and Kang-In Lee all departed for big money.

With five players willing to commit their futures to the Parc des Princes side – including three indisputable starters in Fabian Ruiz, Joao Neves and Willian Pacho – the foundation of the team remains in place.

It is also a sign that PSG are trusting their process, despite a poor start to the season that has seen them go four matches across all competitions without a victory.

That run continued on Friday as they lost 2-1 to Monaco in their first home Ligue 1 match of the campaign. It was a fixture that they dominated, though they were caught out twice on the break.

The Champions League now awaits, with a fixture against Bratislava at home on Tuesday.
