Lionel Messi, Man City v PSG, 2021-22

Lionel Messi has been a Paris Saint-Germain player for three months now and we can already catalogue a number of highs and lows for the Argentina international in the French capital.

The superstar shocked the entire sport in the summer, when La Liga rules made it impossible for Barca to renew the player’s contract and as such Messi was forced to move.

Six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi was emotional at his departing press conference at Camp Nou, making it clear he had left the club against his will.

Messi had spent 17 years in the Barcelona first team and won the Champions League four times.

Once his departure was confirmed, Messi very quickly opted for a new challenge at PSG, a team who are craving their first European crown.

How well is the forward doing at his new club?

Messi made his PSG debut as a second-half substitute against Reims on August 29, 2021, and it was a quiet beginning as his new team eased to a 2-0 win.

The 34-year-old was then handed his first PSG start in the Champions League trip to Brugge on September 15, his side suffering frustration in a disappointing 1-1 draw where he did not score.

The former Barcelona star was left waiting for his first goal after another blank in the match against Lyon, a fixture which he again started. He did hit the crossbar with a trademark free-kick but was then substituted after 76 minutes, a decision he reacted angrily to by refusing the hand of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Messi missed the 2-1 win at Metz on September 22 due to a knee injury and also sat out the 2-0 victory over Montpellier three days later as his frustrating start to life in Paris continued.

However, the star finally came to life on the biggest of stages when he played a vital role in beating Manchester City and his former coach Pep Guardiola in the Champions League, with a remarkable strike in the 2-0 victory giving him his first PSG goal.

But in the very next game Messi was brought crashing back down to Earth as PSG's eight-match winning start to Ligue 1 came to an end with a 2-0 defeat at Rennes.

After the international break, Messi missed out on PSG's 2-1 win over Angers at Parc des Princes as he returned back too late from Argentina duty to be considered.

However, he was back on form for PSG in a competition he has so often thrived in, scoring two goals in a hard-fought and dramatic 3-2 victory over Leipzig in the Champions League.

Messi experienced his first taste of Le Classique when PSG travelled to play rivals Marseille but was still unable to score his first Ligue 1 goal of the season as the game finished 0-0.

The player's struggles in Ligue 1 continued right up until the end of October, when a start against Lille lasted just 45 minutes, as the player was pulled off at half-time in order to claw back a one-goal deficit and ultimately win all three points.

Messi subsequently missed the Champions League matchday four encounter with Leipzig in Germany due to muscular discomfort. The game finished 2-2 in Leo's absence.

He also missed out on the following Ligue 1 encounter against Bordeaux because of the same problem. PSG won that fixture 3-2 thanks to goals from Neymar, who scored twice, and Kylian Mbappe.

Messi returned from international duty and finally claimed his all-important first goal in Ligue 1 with a tremendous strike late on in PSG's 3-1 home victory over Nantes, prior to watching a shot of his hit off a defender and loop over the opposing keeper for an own goal.

The return game against Man City in the Champions League groups didn't go so well as the one in Paris for Messi as PSG fell to a 2-1 defeat. PSG did qualify for the last 16, though, albeit as group runners-up.

Messi will look to bounce back when domestic action returns with a trip to Saint Etienne on Sunday.

This page will be regularly updated to showcase Messi's individual club statistics for PSG throughout the season after his big transfer.

Lionel Messi 2020-21 stats

Messi was prolific in his last season at Barca

Messi was prolific in his last season at Barca

What proved to be Messi’s final season at Barcelona ended with him winning one trophy, the Copa del Rey.

Messi scored twice in a 4-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the final, but it was Atletico Madrid and his former team-mate Luis Suarez who triumphed over Real Madrid and Barca in La Liga.

In the Champions League, Messi’s future employers PSG ended Barca’s hopes in the last-16 stage with a 5-2 aggregate victory.

The Argentina forward scored in both legs, including a stunning goal in Paris, but also missed a penalty in that second leg. Kylian Mbappe netted a famous hat-trick in the Camp Nou game.

Individually, Messi topped the scoring charts in Spain with 30 goals and struck 38 times from 47 appearances in total across all competitions.

That was seven more goals than he had managed in 2019/20, though still short of the peak numbers he had previously produced at Camp Nou.
