After a year of speculation, Lionel Messi ultimately completed a shock transfer to Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona.

It looked like Messi was poised to stay at Barcelona on reduced terms but, due to the financial problems at Camp Nou, he has teamed up with a plethora of world-class stars such as Neymar and Marco Verratti in Ligue 1.

Messi finally moving to a new league at the age of 34 will be European football's most fascinating story of the 2021/22 season - and domestic honours in France will almost certainly follow.

While the forward admitted circumstances had forced him to leave Barca against his will, it is a move that he will hope boosts his chances of winning the fifth Champions League trophy he craves before his career ends.

Messi made his debut as a second-half substitute against Reims on August 29, 2021. He then was handed his first start in the Champions League trip to Brugge on September 15.

The former Barcelona star is still waiting for his first PSG goal after another blank in the match against Lyon, a fixture which he again started. He did hit the crossbar with a trademark free-kick but was then substituted after 76 minutes, a decision he reacted angrily to by refusing the hand of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Messi missed the 2-1 win at Metz on September 22 due to a knee injury and also sat out the 2-0 victory over Montpellier three days later.

He will be assessed again ahead of the Champions League clash with Manchester City.

It has not been the perfect start to life in Paris for the Argentine superstar.

This page will be regularly updated to showcase Messi's individual club statistics for PSG throughout the season after his big transfer.

Lionel Messi 2020-21 stats

Messi was prolific in his last season at Barca

Messi was prolific in his last season at Barca

What proved to be Messi’s final season at Barcelona ended with him winning one trophy, the Copa del Rey.

Messi scored twice in a 4-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the final, but it was Atletico Madrid and his former team-mate Luis Suarez who triumphed over Real Madrid and Barca in La Liga.

In the Champions League, Messi’s future employers PSG ended Barca’s hopes in the last-16 stage with a 5-2 aggregate victory.

The Argentina forward scored in both legs, including a stunning goal in Paris, but also missed a penalty in that second leg. Kylian Mbappe netted a famous hat-trick in the Camp Nou game.

Individually, Messi topped the scoring charts in Spain with 30 goals and struck 38 times from 47 appearances in total across all competitions.

That was seven more goals than he had managed in 2019/20, though still short of the peak numbers he had previously produced at Camp Nou.
