Lewandowski slams media for twisting Messi's words

Robert Lewandowski has hit out at the media for twisting his words after it was claimed he questioned Lionel Messi’s sincerity.
Messi controversially picked up a record seventh Ballon d’Or of his career in Paris last week, with Lewandowski finishing second and Jorginho third.

Many people felt that Lewandowski was the more deserving champion, after a sensational 2020/21 season during which he scored 48 goals before starting the new campaign with 27 strikes in 21 matches.
During his victory speech the Argentine remarked that the Pole should have been given the 2020 Ballon d’Or.
Lewandowski responded to this a few days later by saying: “I'm not that enthusiastic about getting the 2020 award.
"I would like it [Messi's 2020 Ballon d'Or statement] to be a sincere and courteous statement from a great player and not just empty words."

These words were widely reported as Lewandowski questioning Messi’s sincerity but the Bayern Munich star has denied this interpretation.
What did Lewandowski say to clarify Messi quotes?
"[My comments] are being misinterpreted. I never said that Messi's words weren't sincere," Lewandowski told Polish channel 'Kanale Sportowym'.
"On the contrary, his speech at the ceremony in Paris when he said that, in his opinion I deserved the 2020 Ballon d'Or, moved me and truly made me happy.
"With my comments I just wanted to say that, of course, I would be very happy if Messi's words were listened to. I respect and appreciate Lionel Messi beyond measure and again I congratulate him for winning the 2021 Ballon d'Or."
Lewandowski will next be in action on Wednesday when Bayern host Messi’s old side Barcelona in the final matchday of the Champions League group stages.
