Reports have suggested that Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino is close to losing his job following his side's Champions League exit to Real Madrid.

PSG were 2-0 up in the tie before a late Karim Benzema hat-trick succumbed the Parisians to another early exit in a competition that has so far eluded them.

With Lionel Messi, Achraf Hakimi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos, and Georginio Wijnaldum added to the squad last summer, PSG were expected to challenge for the Champions League, but fell at the first knockout stage, to the disappointment of their owners.

The French giants are still top of Ligue 1, but did suffer a 3-0 away loss to AS Monaco at the weekend, and have lost four of their past six games in all competitions.

Pressure is therefore on Pochettino, but the club will have to be wary if they decide to make a change in the dugout. According to L'Equipe, via Get French Football News, it would require a huge €20 million to relieve Pochettino and his five assistants from their duties in the French capital.

Pochettino reportedly earns around €1.1m per month at PSG, while his assistants earn between €20,000 and €80,000 per month. They are contracted at the club until June 2023.

PSG currently hold a 12-point lead at the top of Ligue 1 so reclaiming the title from last year's winners Lille looks likely, but the exit from Europe could prove costly for the Argentine head coach.

Will PSG sack Pochettino?

The last time PSG sacked a manager was also mid-season, when Thomas Tuchel was fired halfway through the 2020/21 campaign. Pochettino was the man to replace him, although Tuchel won the Champions League with Chelsea just a few short months later.

If Pochettino is sacked, then the Manchester United job would be his most likely destination. Man Utd currently have Ralf Rangnick in charge, but he will move higher up the food chain in the summer with a new head coach taking over.

Pochettino and Ajax's Erik ten Hag are reportedly two of the club's biggest targets for the role.
