One of the candidates running to become the next president of Barcelona has identified Harry Kane as a prime transfer target should he be elected.

The Barcelona presidential election will come in March and, at the moment, candidates are on campaigns to try and gain votes. These campaigns usually involve big promises, sometimes involving transfers.

Various candidates have already promised to bring back Lionel Messi, for example.

Xavier Vilajoana believes the club are in desperate need of a new centre-forward and centre-back.

"What we're missing is a striker," he told ESPN.

"A centre forward who is capable of linking up play, but who is also a killer in the box. I think a good centre back is needed as well. I'm not saying that the ones we have aren't good, but a centre back who can balance out the youth and inexperience.

"I think that with these two signings, and with what we have coming up through the ranks, with what we already have in the team, we wouldn't need to make so many changes."

When asked to name a striker who he'd like to sign for Barca, he quickly replied with:

"There is one. In fact, we've already made some contact, and I think he's a player who would be a great fit, pending his contractual situation: it's Harry Kane.

"Kane is a centre forward who would fit in perfectly with our style of play. He's a striker who is capable of dropping back to link up with his teammates. He is also capable of playing as a pure No.9, a killer, a finisher.

"He is a player who brings mobility. He also performs well when teams sit deep. He would add a lot of value to Barcelona's game."

Kane is currently at Bayern Munich smashing goalscoring records and although the club are working on extending his stay in Bavaria with a new contract, he has a €60 million release clause that can be triggered this summer.

Quite how Barcelona may afford that is anyone's guess due to their current financial situation, but Vilajoana has named him as a target nonetheless.

Messi back to Barcelona?

Another candidate for the presidency has pledged to bring Messi back after the Argentine left the club under a cloud without any fanfare to sign for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

Marc Ciria is among the names aiming to be named as Barcelona’s new president on March 15. A banner depicting Messi holding his Barca shirt was unveiled in the heart of the city and Ciria has built his campaign around bringing the club legend back for one final stint after his sudden exit to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

"The first thing is to bring Messi back to the club and give him the tribute he deserves,” Ciria told Cadena Ser. “An idol like him, the best player in the history of football, who came up through La Masia, is a draw for thousands of members."

“He was kicked out of the club, just as many members have been. We want to bring this club back to its members, and with Messi at the helm, we are very excited to have the Barça we deserve again.

He added: “This tribute is based on passion, emotion, and being clear that we are the good guys. Most members want to recover the excitement of having the best player in history at home, from where he never had to leave.”
