Barcelona have seen their salary cap slashed by a whopping €112 million by LaLiga, which explains their relatively understated summer business.

The Blaugrana are once more flying under Hansi Flick after winning a domestic treble last year. Although they dropped points against Rayo Vallecano in August, Barcelona have been otherwise flawless in terms of their results so far.

The Catalans are coming off an impressive 2-1 Champions League win over Newcastle at a rocking St. James' Park that saw summer signing Marcus Rashford net a superb double.

The Englishman is one of just three new recruits at Barcelona, joining on loan from Man Utd with a €30 million purchase option. Joan Garcia was signed from city rivals Espanyol for €25 million, while wonderkid Roony Bardghji arrived for just €2.5m from Copenhagen.

Heading into the summer, Barcelona thought that they would finally return to LaLiga's much-talked-about 1:1 financial rule after years of pinching pennies, but this ultimately failed to materialise, causing fresh problems.

Barcelona's salary cap slashed

Barcelona's failure to return to 1:1 stems from the fact that the €100m VIP seat leasing deal with auditors Crowe remains in limbo despite having been agreed in December.

This deal gave Barcelona financial wiggle room in the January window, but Crowe claim that they never gave the final green light for this transaction and removed it from their accounts in April.

This has now seen LaLiga slash €112m from Barcelona's salary cap, amounting to a 24 per cent decrease compared to January, which explains why they did not splash the cash in the summer window.

The club's current limit now stands at €351m, the second highest in the division after Real Madrid with a whopping €781m. Atletico Madrid clock in at €327m. Turmoil-stricken Sevilla have the smallest salary cap in the division with just €22m.

LaLiga's stringent financial regulations have repeatedly come under fire as clubs, particularly smaller ones, feel hamstrung by the need to constantly balance the books. Getafe, for example, had to reluctantly sell key players despite being in a fairly healthy position due to the simple fact that they are a small club with limited income.
