Barcelona BOMB: PSG make bid for two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas
PSG have made an offer for Barcelona superstar Alexia Putellas in a bid to pull off what is being described as a 'Neymar-style' transfer.
The Spain international is a two-time Ballon d'Or winner and widely regarded as one of the finest players the women's game has produced. Alexia is an institution in Barcelona and Spain.
Born in Catalunya, the 31-year-old returned to the Blaugrana in 2012 after previously spending time in their academy. She has made north of 400 appearances and scored over 200 goals, climbing up to fourth in the club's overall goalscoring charts.
Alexia has been a vitally important cog in Barcelona's team as they have dominated Spanish and European football in recent years. However, an ACL injury in 2022, the effects of which were still felt long after she recovered, has seen her influence gradually wane.
The superstar attacker has yet to score a goal in three appearances in this nascent season, and it looks as though her illustrious time with the Blaugrana could be coming to an end in the not-too-distant future.
PSG make Putellas offer
According to Mundo Deportivo, PSG have made a blockbuster offer for Alexia, proposing a lucrative four-year contract and informing Barcelona that they will trigger her reported €1.1 million release clause.
The French window is still open, so PSG can bring in the Spanish megastar immediately. Foot Mercato has described this proposed deal as a 'Neymar-style' transfer given Alexia's stature in the game, as well as the fee and clubs involved.
Although not a world record, she would become one of the most expensive players in the history of women's football, joining a select group of five players to have cost over €1m. All of them moved this year.
PSG are looking to sign her as a nominal replacement for captain Grace Geyoro, who completed a €1.65m Deadline Day move to promoted Women's Super League side London City Lionesses.
Alyssa Thompson, who joined Chelsea from Angel City on the same day, can overtake Geyoro as the most expensive women's player ever if all the bonuses in her initial €1.15m deal are triggered.
Alexia leaving Barcelona for PSG would send shockwaves throughout the women's game, but the chances of this deal materialising appear to be slim. Mundo Deportivo reports that a summit has been held in which Alexia told club chiefs that she is happy to continue for another year.
Her current contract expires in 2026, although easy-to-achieve bonuses can trigger an automatic extension. It is suggested that an amicable separation could take place next summer if she expresses a desire to pursue a new challenge.
