Lamine Yamal in DREAMLAND as Barcelona 'promise' to complete €100m transfer
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has “promised” to sign Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez next summer, according to reports in Spain.
Alvarez, 25, has been heavily linked with a shock Wanda Metropolitano departure in recent months, despite only moving to the club from Manchester City for €75 million in 2024, and a move to Camp Nou could reportedly be on the cards.
Arsenal and Liverpool were among the clubs interested in agreeing a deal for the Argentina international earlier this year, while Barcelona are also eager to sign him amid their pursuit of a suitable long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Spanish outlet Fichajes now claim that Laporta has “promised” to sign Alvarez in 2026 as he looks to be re-elected as Barcelona’s club president.
The former Man City striker still has five years remaining on his current contract with Diego Simeone’s side and the Spanish giants are therefore unwilling to sanction a sale for less than €100m.
Barcelona’s financial woes could impact their ability to fund a move for Alvarez next summer, but Laporta is reportedly determined to bring him to Camp Nou.
Barcelona to sign Julian Alvarez?
Barcelona have been linked with a number of different centre forwards over the past few months, including the likes of Alexander Isak, Jonathan David and Samu Aghehowa, and they have now earmarked Alvarez as their top target.
The Argentina superstar scored 29 goals and provided eight assists in 57 appearances during his debut campaign at Atletico Madrid and he is currently the fifth-most valuable striker in world football, as per FootballTransfers’ in-house Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) algorithm.
Laporta’s promise to bring him to Camp Nou will therefore come as welcome news to the likes of Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha, who will be aiming to guide Barcelona to Champions League glory for the first time since 2015.
