Former Chelsea and Real Madrid star Eden Hazard has been accused of “making fun of fans” following revelations he made in an interview that was published in France over the weekend.

Hazard admitted to France Football that he did not care for sports nutrition and that he would drink the day before matches.

The former Belgium international hung up his boots in the summer aged just 32, with his potential considered unfulfilled during a four-year stint at Real Madrid, who had bought him for €100m from Chelsea with just a year left of his deal.

In revelations that shocked fans, Hazard said: “Diet is rubbish, it’s useless. Well, it’s good if you want to play until you’re 40, but I knew that wouldn’t be the case with me. A little champagne, it’s in the fridge all the time.

“It would happen to me the day before the match, to eat at home, to drink a small bottle.”

This attitude was slammed by Christophe Dugarry, who won the 1998 World Cup with France and turned out with Milan and Barcelona among others during his playing career.

What did Dugarry say?

Speaking to RMC, the former striker fumed: “It’s very nice to publish this now, but he should have said it before. It's when you sign your multi-million euro contract that you have to tell the president that you're going out in the evening. Did he say to his managers and teammates that he was getting drunk and that he didn't like running in training? Football is a team and professional sport. You have obligations.

“Obviously you can't respect everything to the letter but to promote nonsense is a shame.

“Hazard was a great player but to say that is a shame for the supporters who paid to come see you play when you were drunk the day before.

“His interview is making fun of the world and football. If you want to act like a courageous guy, you have to say it before. Why didn't he tell Zidane before being signed by Real Madrid for €100m?”
