Joan Laporta has been discussing the European Super League again, with only Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus still open to the idea of one.

Last week, Florentino Perez spoke about the future of the Super League project, highlighting the need for top clubs to constantly play against each other, but Laporta has taken a different approach.

Barcelona are still adamant on the project going ahead, and Laporta spoke about it at a public event, highlighting the changes he’d make.

The Barcelona President has gone away from the original idea but maintains it was still a good idea and that his changes would make it suitable.

He said: “I entered into the Super League as a representative of Barca with everything already quite advanced. My criteria was, to get rid of a closed league, we have a to have an Super League, there must be a meritocracy.

“And there is another thing we have to combine it with, the Super League with the leagues of every country. For me, that is incredibly important. I believe in the leagues of every country and for me it would be a serious error if the Super League substitutes the leagues.”

“I think that playing between the big clubs just amongst ourselves all the time would get tiring. It would end up tired. For those of us who like football, we would end up tired. It is beautiful and healthy that a smaller team beats a big one. Going for the underdog is very beautiful. And when Leicester won in England it was special. That is football.

“A Super League that will be an improved Champions League. With a very good format of the competition, it will definitely be the most attractive competition in the world.”

The Super League project was officially launched in April 2021 but shelved within three days as nine of its 12 members ditched the plan.

Still, the two Clasico rivals and Juventus remain adamant on its future existence and are working on a resolution for it in the coming years.
