Gerard Pique’s tenure at Barcelona may not go on for much longer, as the club are wishing for his retirement in the coming months to benefit them.

The defender has rarely featured this season, spending much of his time on the bench, and is not happy with his situation at the club so far.

The likes of Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia have had game time ahead of Pique, and that has frustrated the veteran defender, as he wishes to prove he can still play at the highest level.

Now, based on his previous comments, there’s a belief Pique could leave the club or retire at the end of the season, and that could benefit Barcelona in the long run as it would bring them some financial freedom.

Barcelona waiting on Pique's decision

In the case of Pique’s retirement, Barcelona would benefit greatly from an economic perspective as it would save them plenty of money in wages and allow them to invest elsewhere in the team.

Previously, Pique had mentioned that he would rather retire than spend his time at Barcelona being a player on the bench, and that has suggested he’d be calling time on his career soon.

One source at the club suggests that Barcelona are hoping he keeps his word and calls it a day as there would be a great economic relief for the Blaugrana in the coming months.

Pique has expressed his disappointment over his lack of game time – he felt he was one of the club’s top defenders last season and should be spending more time on the pitch, something he expressed in dressing room.

His demeanor has reportedly angered Xavi, who is adamant that Pique will play even less now, and there is some belief that the player’s off-field antics and business interests aren’t sitting well within the club either.
