Real Madrid look to be on course to winning La Liga this season, and a lot of the credit has to go to manager Carlo Ancelotti, who has steadied the ship.

There were plenty of doubts whether Ancelotti could repeat the heroics from his first stint between 2013 and 2015 when the Madrid side won the Champions League and Copa del Rey.

Barring his spell at Bayern Munich, Ancelotti hadn’t done much of note since leaving Real Madrid, with insignificant spells at Napoli and Everton casting many doubts over his re-appointment at Spain’s record champions.

Carlo Ancelotti has done well at Real Madrid

He joined Real Madrid at a complicated time as well, following the departure of Zinedine Zidane and constant speculation over the arrival of Kylian Mbappe.

Unlike the last time where Real Madrid were able to break a world-record with the signing of Gareth Bale, Ancelotti didn’t have the financial freedom in the transfer market either.

However, Europe’s record champions have been unfazed this season, and although there have been a few blips, they are still on course for a positive season.

They are 12 points clear of second-placed Barcelona in La Liga and having beaten Chelsea 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, they are set for another appearance in the competition’s last four.

The 4-0 humbling at the hands of Barcelona a few weeks ago raised further questions over Ancelotti’s future, but in the short-run, things are looking good as they won three games on the bounce following the Clasico defeat.

Following their most recent result, a 2-0 win over Getafe, Ancelotti praised his team’s mentality as they approach the end of the season.

“We've not lost our heads after the Barcelona's shock. We have managed the situation well,” Ancelotti said.

“We were a little worried about this game, but the reaction was very good. Those who play less are ready to help from the start or the bench.”

The league win would help Ancelotti claim a piece of history: should they go all the way, he would become the first manager to win each of Europe’s top five league titles, having previously won Serie A with Milan, the Premier League with Chelsea, Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain and the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.

Real Madrid may need as few as three wins to secure the league title and could need as little as two more to win the Champions League.

Things are looking up for them at the moment and despite all the questions and naysayers, history may just remember this season as one that ended with a double for the club.
